EN All the commandments, that I command you this day, take great care to observe: that you may live, and be multiplied, and going in may possess the land, for which the Lord swore to your fathers.
^1
2
EN And you shall remember all the way through which the Lord your God has brought you for forty years through the desert, to afflict you and to prove you, and that the things that were known in your heart might be made known, whether you would keep his commandments or no.
^2
3
EN He afflicted you with want, and gave you manna for your food, which neither you nor your fathers knew: to show that not in bread alone does man live, but in every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.
^3
4
EN Your raiment, with which you were covered, has not decayed for age, and your foot is not worn, lo this is the fortieth year,
^4
5
LA ut recogites in corde tuo, quia sicut erudit filium suum homo, sic Dominus Deus tuus erudivit te,
EN that you may consider in your heart, that as a man trains up his son, so the Lord your God has trained you up.
^5
6
EN That you should keep the commandments of the Lord your God, and walk in his ways, and fear him.
^6
7
LA Dominus enim Deus tuus introducet te in terram bonam, terram rivorum, aquarumque et fontium, in cujus campis et montibus erumpunt fluviorum abyssi:
EN For the Lord your God will bring you into a good land, of brooks and of waters, and of fountains: in the plains of which and the hills deep rivers break out:
^7
8
EN A land of wheat, and barley, and vineyards, wherein fig trees and pomegranates, and oliveyards grow: a land of oil and honey.
^8
9
EN Where without any want you shall eat your bread, and enjoy abundance of all things: where the stones are iron, and out of its hills are dug mines of brass:
^9
10
EN That when you have eaten, and are full, you may bless the Lord your God for the excellent land which he has given you.
^10
[!note]- Not in bread alone, etc…
That is, that God is able to make food of what he pleases for the support of man.
11
EN Take heed, and beware lest at any time you forget the Lord your God, and neglect his commandments and judgments and ceremonies, which I command you this day:
^11
12
EN Lest after you have eaten and are filled, have built goodly houses, and dwelt in them,
^12
13
EN and shall have herds of oxen and flocks of sheep, and plenty of gold and of silver, and of all things,
^13
14
EN your heart be lifted up, and you remember not the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage:
^14
15
EN And was your leader in the great and terrible wilderness, wherein there was the serpent burning with his breath, and the scorpion and the dipsas, and no waters at all: who brought forth streams out of the hardest rock,
^15
16
EN and fed you in the wilderness with manna which your fathers knew not. And after he had afflicted and proved you, at the last he had mercy on you,
^16
17
EN lest you should say in your heart: My own might, and the strength of my own hand have achieved all these things for me.
^17
18
LA sed recorderis Domini Dei tui, quod ipse vires tibi præbuerit, ut impleret pactum suum, super quo juravit patribus tuis, sicut præsens indicat dies.
EN But remember the Lord your God, that he has given you strength, that he might fulfil his covenant, concerning which he swore to your fathers, as this present day shows.
^18
19
LA Sin autem oblitus Domini Dei tui, secutus fueris deos alienos, coluerisque illos et adoraveris: ecce nunc prædico tibi quod omnino dispereas.
EN But if you forget the Lord your God, and follow strange gods, and serve and adore them: behold now I foretell you that you shall utterly perish.
^19
20
EN As the nations, which the Lord destroyed at your entrance, so shall you also perish, if you be disobedient to the voice of the Lord your God.
^20
[!note]- The Dipsas…
A serpent whose bite causes a violent thirst; from whence it has its name, for in Greek dipsa signifies thirst.
